"WEST WITTON, a parish in the wapentake of West Hang, North Riding county York, 4½ miles W. of Middleham. The village is situated on the northern slope of Penhill in Wensleydale, near the river Ure, or Yore. The parish includes the hamlet of Swinethwaite, and the vestiges of an ancient castle, once belonging to Ralph Fizz-Randal. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £105. The church is supposed to have been built in the reign of Henry I. The Roman Catholics and Wesleyans have chapels. There is a National school. The charities produce about £30 per annum."
