St. Mary's Church, Hull

St. Mary's Church, Hull
102. AIR STREET. St. Mary's Anglican church, Sculcoates. This church, the ancient parish church of Sculcoates, is first mentioned in 1232. A drawing of c.1725 is said to show the medieval church which was replaced c.1759 by a new building which has been described as rococo Gothic in appearance but essentially Classical. Considerable alterations were made to this church in 1827-30, and again in 1861-3, in the latter case by William Botterill of Hull. In 1869 the church was replaced as parish church of Sculcoates by the newly built Church of All Saints, Margaret Street. The old church was again assigned its own district in 1873, before demolition c.1916 when it was replaced by the new Church of St. Mary in Sculcoates Lane. The new building incorporated much material from the old church, the tower of which long survived the demolition of the rest of the building. The churchyard remains though many gravestones have been removed. [The Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull]
