St. Mark's Church, Hull

St. Mark's Church, Hull
120. ST. MARK STREET. St. Mark's Anglican church. The church was consecrated in 1844 to serve a district east of the River Hull assigned from Sutton together with the extra-parochial area of Garrison Side, an area known as the Groves. The building was designed by H.F. Lockwood of Hull, the transepts being altered in 1881 by the Hull architects R.G. Smith and F.S. Brodrick. Red brick with stone dressings in Early English style. It had seating for 1115. The top 25ft. of the spire was lost in a gale in December 1863. Later the spire was partially removed and, in 1938, the lantern was rebuilt. The church was badly damaged in the Second World War and closed in 1948. It was demolished in 1958-9 and its site is now used to store timber. [The Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull]
