53. GREAT THORNTON STREET. Wesleyan chapel. Built 1842 at a cost of over £7,000. A magnificent Greek Revival building designed by H.F. Lockwood of Hull. Could seat 1,400 (1881). Stone facade with brick sides and back. One of Hull's finest buildings it was largely destroyed by fire in 1907. One wing survived into the 1950s. Replaced by THORNTON HALL.
