St. Stephen's Church, Hull

St. Stephen's Church, Hull
84. ST. STEPHEN'S SQUARE. St. Stephen's Anglican church. The church, consecrated in 1845, was built as a chapel-of-ease to serve that part of the parish of Holy Trinity known as North Myton. The church was eventually assigned its own district in 1859. Designed by Hull architect H.F. Lockwood, the building was the most elaborate Victorian church in Hull. Built of stone in Early English style. The church with its spire, a well known landmark behind Paragon station, was damaged during the Second World War, but its shell and spire survived until demolition in 1955-6. The site is now a garden. After the church was bombed, services continued in St. Stephen's Parish Rooms, now part of the Spring Street Theatre. [The Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull]
