| 99. BEVERLEY ROAD. Newland Congregational church. Foundation stone laid November 1904, opened 1906. Designed by Moulds and Porritt of Bury, Manchester and London in a Free Gothic style. Of red and yellow brick with terracotta dressings. The building was much criticised in Hull for its break from Nonconformist tradition. The church which was octagonal in plan with a huge dome-like roof was unusual in having a side pulpit and chancel. The corner tower and spire, 120 feet in height, had terracotta statues on the corner buttresses fifty feet up. The church was demolished 1969 except for the east end which has been adapted for services. [The Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull] |
